Nintendo PlayStation NES CD-ROM prototype
Heritage Auctions

The original prototype of the PlayStation has sold for $360,000 through Heritage Auctions.

The unit that sold is currently the only ‘Nintendo PlayStation’ known to exist, making it one of the most valuable video game consoles in existence. According to Vice, the prototype is now the highest-priced video game console ever, eclipsing the sealed first-run copy of the original NES that sold for $100,150 in a private auction in 2019.

It’s not clear who the new owner of the console is, but the previous owners revealed that they originally purchased the console for $75 at a bankruptcy auction.

Perhaps the world’s rarest gaming console, the co-branded system is a result of an early partnership between Nintendo and Sony, which ultimately led to the creation of the Sony PlayStation.

As one of fewer than 200 prototype units ever produced, the piece of gaming history is incredibly sought after and reached a six-figure sum at auction mere hours after going live. Oculus VR founder even tweeted that at one point he was the highest bidder at $205,000.
